The Valley of Flowers is one of India's most iconic high-altitude treks, nestled in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at an elevation of 3,658 m. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this breathtaking valley bursts into colour between July and September with over 500 species of alpine wildflowers — from Brahmakamal and Blue Poppy to Cobra Lily and Marsh Marigold. Day by Day
Detailed Itinerary
Govindghat → Ghangaria
Trek begins
Your journey begins at Govindghat, a small town on the banks of the Alaknanda River. After an early breakfast, begin the trail that winds through dense forests of oak, rhododendron, and pine. The path follows the Pushpawati River, gradually ascending through charming villages and cascading waterfalls. Arrive at Ghangaria — the base camp for both Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib — by late afternoon. Check in to your guesthouse, enjoy a warm dinner, and rest for the days ahead.

The main event
Today is the highlight of the entire trek. Set off early morning towards the Valley of Flowers, just 4 km from Ghangaria. As you enter the valley, the landscape transforms dramatically — a vast carpet of wildflowers stretches across the valley floor, framed by snow-capped peaks. Spend 2–3 hours exploring the valley at your own pace, photographing the extraordinary floral diversity. Look out for Brahmakamal, Blue Himalayan Poppy, Cobra Lily, Balsam, and dozens of other rare species. Return to Ghangaria by afternoon.

Sacred summit
An early start is essential today for the steep ascent to Hemkund Sahib, one of the highest Sikh Gurudwaras in the world. The trail climbs sharply through rocky terrain and alpine meadows, with stunning views opening up at every turn. At the summit, the glacial Hemkund Lake reflects the surrounding peaks in perfect stillness. Seek blessings at the Gurudwara, enjoy the langar (community meal), and soak in the profound spiritual atmosphere. Descend carefully back to Ghangaria for a well-earned rest.
